Life in Middle School

Middle school teachers enjoy spirit week as much as the students.

On dress up like a fictional character day, Willy Wonka took over Mr. Cat's class.
Welcome to the Language Arts and World History Factory.
Put a metaphor here and a symbol there and ride the poetry coaster!
Golden ticket? How about a golden line?

Super hero day produced Green Arrow/Earth Man
Or maybe Robin Hood? Steal from the rich, give to the poor?
Shoot out some irony and twist your story!
History swirls and swirls and keeps repeating itself!

The week ended with crazy day. Here Mr. R and Mr. Cat get crazy collaborative, dropping science and poetry upon the students.
It's a great job being stuck in the middle. We showed great spirit, ASD!

Dance

Parenting is especially rewarding when you see your children enjoying an interest that you helped foster but were not necessarily good at yourself. Ever since my daughters were born, I have surrounded them with music. And ever since they could crawl, I have danced with them just about every day.

I am not what anyone would consider a good dancer. I try but it is not a natural skill I possess. But I have always loved singing and dancing to tunes. And now to see my daughters loving music and taking dancing classes, it makes me very happy. I am so proud of their moves and more importantly, the pleasure they seem to take from being a part of a performance on the stage. The joy I felt at being part of a team in sports, they seem to derive from being a part of the show. Good for them!

On Saturday, they participated in a huge dance performance that culminated the end of their weekly dance classes. Rosie did her Bollywood moves to "Desi Girl" and Bella did her street jazz to "It's On." Jill and I were simply amazed at all of the performers for their poise and choreography. These girls were all able to excel and fill the big stage with a very entertaining show.

Earlier this month, Bella performed at the second grade Variety Show with her friend Nyad. They choreographed the routine by themselves and despite her broken wrist, Bella made sure the show went on.

Uganda 7: The Nile Cruise to Murchison Falls

The Nile Cruise up to Murchison Falls was amazing.

The wildlife and the scenery were spectacular.
The elephants meandering down to the Nile.
The baby elephant stayed close to the adult.
The hippos cooled off in the Nile.
The hippos tended to watch as our boat drifted by.
Life flourishes along the Nile.
The birds drank carefully keeping an eye out for Nile crocodiles!
The first glimpse of the falls up around the bend.
The birds preferred where the water was moving faster, probably less predators.
The birds themselves flew fast and ducked into the river for fish.
Murchison Falls
The falls mixed with a rain shower to create a really cool photo.
Nice smile, Mr. Hippo!

The crew navigate us safely. The boat was named The African Queen.
Years ago, Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn filmed the classic movie The African Queen here on the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park.

Masooli School Video 2: Masooli Children Songs

Here is a video from the Masooli School visit with SEENAH. The singing is the Masooli children who serenaded us upon arrival and later sang in their music class.

Uganda 6: Strangler Fig

The Strangler Fig, a duality of Uganda

the towering power
strangles the host tree-

local life crushed by an
outside force
pushing
growing
denying
suppressing

down

until the intruding
branches
reach the
ground and take

root.

Rootwrapped, entangled,
caught in another's
tightening fist-

the host tree
watches the

w i d e n i n g

grip,

the fig's royal crown
grows,

soon overshadowing the
tree.

Eventually, the host tree dies.

This agent of death
devours its host,

local life crushed by an
outside force
pushing
growing
denying
suppressing

down.
